Overwatch Sombra Update 1.5 Live On PS4, Xbox One And PC

Overwatch Sombra Update

The latest Overwatch Sombra Update finally places Sombra in their list of heroes which went live on the PS4, Xbox One and PC on November 15.

Over the past couple months, Blizzard had been teasing their biggest enigma and most elusive character who was finally confirmed at Blizzcon 2016.

Intrepid fans in the months leading up to the reveal were tirelessly trying to figure out the little Easter eggs Blizzard were planting in their trailers.

According to Game Detectives who found the first clue to the Sombra mystery back in July when Ana was announced, noticed a sheet of hexadecimal numbers that translated to ASCII. After running it through a XOR cipher with the constant 23, it uncovered a repeating phrase in Spanish, “la que tiene la información; tiene el poder” which translates to “She who has the information, has the power.”

Sombra can be best defined as an “infiltrator” who utilizes her Themoptic Camo to gain temporary invisibility and teleportation via a beacon, can disable enemy shields with EMP blasts and can hack into Torbjörn’s turrets as well as disabling health kits.

She is aligned as an Offensive hero joining the ranks with Genji, Tracer and Soldier 76.

The update introduces a new arcade mode which replaces Weekly Brawls whilst adding five new game types. These game types include 3v3 Elimination, 6v6 Mystery Heroes, 6v6 All Brawls and 1v1 Mystery Duel.

The new “Ecopoint: Antarctica” map part of the update is now live in the map rotation for the Arena mode. The scale of the map is quite small as it supports 1v1 duels and 3v3 battles. It also revolves around Mei-Ling and a bit of her backstory as a climatologist who was cryogenically frozen for a decade. The “Oasis” map used for Control gameplay will remain in the PTR and is expected to release early 2017.

During the Overwatch Public Test Realm phase, Blizzard’s Principal Designer Geoff Goodman reported that the testing phase on PC was largely successful as he wrote to fans on the official forum:

“Some of the changes were much bigger than other changes […] I wanted to make it clear that the sky wasn’t falling and we’re just going to try some things to see what works.

“That said, to my surprise, basically everything worked out even better than I had hoped. At this point it looks like most or all of the changes are going to make it to live after all.

“We do have plans for a follow-up patch to catch any serious bugs or balance issues that come up, we we’ll be able to respond quickly with any necessary changes.”

The 1.5 patch makes a number of significant changes with the most notable being a buff to Pharah’s fly abilities which allows her to fly indefinitely as well as how ultimate abilities are being charged for all heroes. This means that heroes like Symmetra can’t feed their ultimate with the teleporter or Torbjörn’s turret for instance.

Blizzard explained that, “game-changing ultimate abilities were coming up a bit too frequently. This change helps keep them in check while still allowing them to be powerful.”

This means that most Ultimates now cost 25 percent more than they used to with Mei’s ultimate increasing an additional 15 percent.

  1. Va saw an increase in Mech health from 100 points to 200 points whilst her ultimate cost has decreased by 20 percent. Solider 76 buffs include an increase from 17 to 20 and a slight increase in bullet speed.

While some heroes were getting buffed, others were on the end of various nerfs such as Lucio’s Amp It Up healing rate has decreased by 10 percent, Zarya’s power gained from barriers decreased 20 percent and Ana’s Nano Boost seizes to increase movement speed for the target.
